Dr. Chad Markert of Wake Forest University was interested in the effects of the introduction of certain drugs on mouse vasculature. To study these effects, he sent samples of mouse limbs to Virginia Tech's Multiscale CT Facility to be scanned by Kriti Sen Sharma. By using the appropriate settings, the vasculature of the mouse limb was able to be shown in great detail.
Although the object being scanned is a mouse limb, the main focus of the scan was the veins in the limb and the effects that drug injections would have.
About the Scan
The sample arrived to Virginia Tech's Multiscale CT Facility soaked in a formalin solution. This solution preserved the mouse limb and kept the vein structure intact. Because it was only necessary to view the vein structure, deterioration of the musculature did not affect the results. In keeping with the focus on the mouse's veins near the knee joint, only the knee was scanned.
